SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/aero-altimeter-pressure
Which measurement lets an altimeter estimate altitude?
It senses static air pressure.
- Static air pressure ✔
- Fuel temperature
- Magnetic heading
Why: Atmospheric pressure normally decreases as altitude increases. An altimeter compares sensed pressure with its setting and displays an altitude.
Huh, didn't know that: Pilots update the altimeter setting when local pressure changes.
The altimeter rose through the ranks one foot at a time.

That is how altimeters work. Just before take-off, a pilot sets the altimeter to the local pressure.
