Why can heated air lift a hot-air balloon?
Heated air is less dense than cooler air.
- It becomes denser
- It becomes less dense ✔
- It gains more oxygen
Why: Heating spreads air molecules through a larger volume, lowering density. The lighter air inside the envelope is buoyant in the denser surrounding air.
Huh, didn't know that: Buoyancy also explains why a less-dense object can float in water.
Hot air rose because it wanted a higher position.
