SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/aero-hubble-above-atmosphere
Why can Hubble make especially clear space images?
It observes above Earth's atmosphere, which can blur light.
- It uses Moonlight only
- It flies inside clouds
- It avoids atmospheric distortion ✔
Why: Moving air in Earth's atmosphere bends and blurs incoming starlight. Hubble orbits above that distortion, so it can capture unusually clear and detailed observations.
Huh, didn't know that: Hubble observes wavelengths from ultraviolet through visible light to near infrared.
Hubble moved above the blur to get the big picture.
