What does an airplane's Mach number compare?
Its speed compared with the speed of sound.
- Its speed compared with the speed of sound ✔
- Its height compared with sea level
- Its weight compared with its lift
Why: Mach 1 means flying at the speed of sound; Mach 2 is twice that. It is named for Ernst Mach, a 19th century physicist who studied how gases move.
Huh, didn't know that: Below Mach 1 is subsonic, near Mach 1 is transonic, and above Mach 1 is supersonic.
Why did the jet study so hard? It wanted to go to the Mach-ademy.
