SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/aero-orbital-debris-danger
Why can even small orbital debris damage a spacecraft?
It travels extremely fast, making impacts powerful.
- It is extremely cold
- It moves at very high speed ✔
- It is strongly magnetic
Why: Objects in orbit move at tremendous speeds. A tiny fragment can strike with enough energy to damage or destroy spacecraft hardware.
Huh, didn't know that: Orbital debris includes dead spacecraft, old rocket bodies, bolts, lens caps and paint flakes.
Why did the satellite tidy its room? It needed more space!
