SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/aero-polar-orbit-mapping
What is a polar orbit especially useful for?
Mapping and watching the whole Earth, since it passes over both poles.
- Staying over one city all day
- Mapping the whole planet ✔
- Reaching the Moon faster
Why: A polar orbit has a 90 degree inclination, so the satellite runs pole to pole. As Earth spins underneath, later passes cross new regions, making the orbit useful for mapping.
Huh, didn't know that: Inclination is the angle between an orbit and the equator. Zero degrees means flying right over the equator.
Why did the polar satellite wear a scarf? It kept visiting the North Pole.
