How did the Wright brothers control roll on their early aircraft?
Wing warping, twisting the wing tips with cables.
- By moving a heavy weight around
- By twisting the wing tips, called wing warping ✔
- By turning the propeller backward
Why: The Wrights watched soaring birds and saw them change the shape of their wings to roll. They used cables to twist the tips of their wings. Modern airplanes use ailerons for the same job.
Huh, didn't know that: Control was the problem the Wrights thought was hardest to solve, harder than lift or power.
Why did the Wright brothers twist their wings? They wanted to put a new spin on flying.
