SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/aero-x-prize-repeat-flight
What repeat-flight rule made the X-Prize especially challenging?
Repeat the spaceflight within two weeks.
- Fly again within two weeks ✔
- Remain in orbit for one year
- Launch from three continents
Why: The same vehicle had to reach the required altitude twice within two weeks. This tested rapid reuse, not just a one-time achievement.
Huh, didn't know that: Each qualifying flight also had to carry the weight of three adults.
The spacecraft liked the first flight so much it asked for a quick sequel.
