SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/boat-ecos-law
Federal law requires operators of boats under 26 feet to use the engine cut-off switch link when?
When on plane or above displacement speed.
- Only when boating after dark
- When on plane or above displacement speed ✔
- Only while docking at a marina
Why: Since April 1, 2021, operators of covered boats must wear the cut-off link when on plane. If they are thrown out, the engine stops instead of the boat running off, possibly circling back at people in the water.
Huh, didn't know that: NASBLA notes the link does not need to be attached while idling or docking.
Why did the lanyard break up with the key? It felt way too attached.
