SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/boat-inspect-cutoff-device
Why check that your engine cut-off device works before a trip?
A broken one may keep the engine from restarting.
- It may stop the engine restarting ✔
- It controls the bilge pump
- It limits the boat's top speed
Why: The cut-off device stops the engine if the operator is thrown from the helm. If it is not working right, it may prevent the boat from restarting, so test it during your inspection.
Huh, didn't know that: A disrupted electrical system can knock out electronic navigation, propulsion or steering.
The cut-off switch is a great listener. It knows exactly when to stop.
