SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/cadet-virtue-golden-mean
In virtue ethics, where does a virtue like friendliness to neighbors usually sit?
Between two extremes, like being nosy and being aloof.
- At the most extreme point possible
- Wherever the majority votes
- Between two extremes ✔
Why: Aristotle taught that virtue is a balance. Being a nosy neighbor is wrong, and so is never knowing your neighbors. The virtuous middle is friendly but respectful of privacy.
Huh, didn't know that: A shy person grows in virtue by being a bit bolder; a chatterbox grows by listening more.
Why did the cadet stand in the middle of the formation? He was looking for the golden mean.
