SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/cdl-look-ahead-12-15
How far ahead should a CDL driver scan the road ahead?
Scan 12 to 15 seconds ahead.
- 5 seconds ahead
- 12 to 15 seconds ahead ✔
- Only the vehicle directly ahead
Why: This gives you time to spot hazards and avoid sudden stops or lane changes. At highway speeds, 12 to 15 seconds is about one quarter of a mile.
Huh, didn't know that: At 55 mph, a vehicle travels about 80 feet in one second.
Why did the trucker stare far down the road? Because last-minute surprises are not a good look.
