Why does each state have two senators?

Equal representation for small states (the Great Compromise).

  1. Equal representation for small states ✔
  2. Bigger states need two senators
  3. So each senator covers half the state

Why: Every state gets two senators no matter its size, so small states have an equal voice. This came from the Great Compromise, also called the Connecticut Compromise.

Huh, didn't know that: Before the 17th Amendment in 1913, state legislatures chose U.S. senators instead of voters.

The dad joke
Why did Rhode Island love the Senate? For once it got the same size slice of pie.
