SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/diab-sweetener-food-additive
Which of these sweeteners has FDA approved as a food additive?
Sucralose. Stevia and monk fruit reached the market a different way.
- Monk fruit extract
- Purified stevia extract
- Sucralose ✔
Why: Sucralose is on FDA's food additive list with sweeteners like aspartame and saccharin. Purified stevia and monk fruit extracts are allowed through GRAS notices, a different safety review route. All of them are permitted in food.
Huh, didn't know that: Saccharin was first discovered and used in 1879.
What did the sugar packet say to the sweetener packet? You're sweet, but I'm the original.
