How early should you signal a highway exit?

Many state manuals say signal about five seconds before exiting.

  1. After entering the ramp
  2. About five seconds before ✔
  3. Only while braking

Why: Signal while still in the proper lane so drivers behind can anticipate your move. Stay within lane markings and enter the exit at a safe speed.

Huh, didn't know that: At 55 mph, five seconds covers roughly 400 feet of road.

The dad joke
The exit signal gave five seconds notice because it was very considerate.
