SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/drone-density-altitude-propeller-efficiency
On a hot day at a high-elevation site, what happens to your drone's propeller efficiency?
It decreases, because thin air gives the props less to push.
- It increases in the thin air
- It decreases ✔
- It stays exactly the same
Why: High density altitude means less dense air. A propeller makes thrust by moving air, so with less air to bite into it makes less thrust and climb suffers.
Huh, didn't know that: Climb performance also shrinks as you go higher, because power required goes up while power available goes down.
Why can't you trust atoms? They make up everything, even thin air.
