After the first dose of a new medication, how long should you wait before flying?

At least 48 hours, to make sure there are no side effects.

  1. At least 4 hours
  2. At least 48 hours ✔
  3. No wait if it's over the counter

Why: Any medicine, prescription or over the counter, can cause drowsiness or slow thinking in some people. Waiting two days after the first dose lets you see how it affects you.

Huh, didn't know that: Antihistamines with diphenhydramine cause drowsiness and stay in your system a long time.

The dad joke
