SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/fdic-categories
Can one person be insured for more than $250,000 at one bank?
Yes, if the money is in different ownership categories.
- No, $250,000 is a hard cap
- Yes, different ownership categories count separately ✔
- Only if you split it between two banks
Why: FDIC says different ownership categories are insured separately, up to at least $250,000 each, even at the same bank. A single account alone does not get extra coverage.
Huh, didn't know that: A trust with more than one beneficiary can be insured for more than $250,000.
Why did the banker sit in the shade? To avoid a run.
