SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/ham-fog-rain-10m-6m
What effect does fog or rain have on 10-meter and 6-meter band signals?
Little effect.
- Strong absorption
- Increased range
- Little effect ✔
Why: Rain and fog mostly trouble microwaves, which have very short wavelengths. The much longer waves of 10 and 6 meters pass through with little effect.
Huh, didn't know that: The 6-meter band is around 50 MHz and 10 meters is around 28 MHz, far below microwave frequencies.
Rain on 6 meters? It's like water off a long wave's back.
