SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hunt-break-action
Why is an open break-action shotgun easy for others to confirm is safe?
They can see the empty chamber, and the firing pin cannot reach the shells.
- The barrel turns orange when open
- The safety locks automatically
- The open hinge shows the chamber is empty ✔
Why: A break action opens on a hinge so the barrel tips down and the chamber is in plain view. When it is open, the firing pin cannot strike a primer. Many beginners start with a single-barrel break action.
Huh, didn't know that: Opening a break action usually ejects a fired shell, but an unfired one must be removed by hand.
Why did the shotgun go on vacation? It needed a break.
