SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hunt-quartering-away
An animal is angled away from you but hasn't fully turned. What is this position called?
Quartering away, a high-probability angle for a clean kill.
- Quartering away ✔
- Quartering toward
- Head-on
Why: When quartering away, the animal's angle still lets a shot reach the heart and lungs. Hunter education pairs it with broadside as the best angles.
Huh, didn't know that: Texas hunter education says quartering shots can still reach the vitals, but broadside is the most effective angle.
Why did the elk turn slightly away? It was trying to make a quarter of a point.
