What is autokinesis?
A still light seeming to move when you stare at it in the dark.
- A still light seeming to move when stared at ✔
- Feeling a turn after leveling the wings
- Mistaking stars for ground lights
Why: In the dark, a stationary light can appear to wander if you stare at it for many seconds. A pilot who tries to line up with that fake motion could lose control of the airplane.
Huh, didn't know that: Mistaking stars and ground lights for each other is a different night illusion, called a false horizon.
I stared at a streetlight so long it started dancing. It had better moves than me.
