SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-dark-adaptation
About how long does complete dark adaptation of the eyes take?
At least 30 minutes in total darkness.
- At least 30 minutes ✔
- About 5 minutes
- About 2 hours
Why: The eyes slowly grow more sensitive in darkness. Full adaptation takes at least 30 minutes, though dim red cockpit light gives moderate adaptation in about 20. One look at a bright light undoes it in seconds.
Huh, didn't know that: To keep some night vision while using a flashlight, the AIM suggests closing one eye.
Why did the sun go to school? To get a little brighter.
