When may an analog 121.5 MHz ELT be tested on the airplane?
During the first 5 minutes after any hour, no more than three sweeps.
- Any time, as long as it is short
- During the first 5 minutes after any hour ✔
- Only between midnight and 6 a.m.
Why: The AIM says analog ELT tests should happen only in the first 5 minutes after the hour, and last no more than three audible sweeps. Tests outside that time should be coordinated with the nearest FAA tower.
Huh, didn't know that: Digital 406 MHz ELTs should be tested only following the unit maker's instructions.
I test my ELT at five past the hour. It's the only thing in my life that's on time.
