SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-load-factor-60-degree-bank
What is the load factor in a coordinated, level turn at 60 degrees of bank?
2 Gs, twice the normal load on the wings.
- 2 Gs ✔
- 1.5 Gs
- 3 Gs
Why: In a level turn the wing must hold up the airplane's weight and also pull it around the turn. At 60 degrees of bank that adds up to twice the normal load. It also raises the stall speed.
Huh, didn't know that: At 80 degrees of bank the load factor jumps to 5.76 Gs.
Why did the airplane start lifting weights? It wanted to handle more Gs.
