SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-radio-initial-contact
What should begin an initial radio call to an ATC facility?
Start with the facility name.
- Your destination
- The current time
- The facility name ✔
Why: Naming the facility first tells everyone whom you are calling. Follow with your full aircraft identification and a short request or message type.
Huh, didn't know that: On an airport surface, include your position in the initial call.
Why did the pilot say the tower's name first? Good calls need proper introductions.
