After a short-field takeoff with an obstacle, when should you transition from VX to VY?
Change to VY after clearing the obstacle.
- Before liftoff
- At the runway midpoint
- After clearing the obstacle ✔
Why: Climb at VX for the steepest path over the obstacle. Once clear, lower the pitch slightly and continue at VY for the best climb rate.
Huh, didn't know that: Without an obstacle, the AFH says maintain VX to at least 50 feet above the takeoff surface.
VX clears the fence, then VY climbs the ladder.
