SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-soft-field-weight-transfer
During a soft-field takeoff roll, where should airplane weight be transferred as quickly as possible?
Transfer weight from the wheels to the wings.
- Wings to the nosewheel
- Wheels to the wings ✔
- Main wheels to the brakes
Why: A nose-high attitude increases lift early, taking weight off wheels that drag through grass, mud, sand, or snow. Use the airplane manufacturer's recommended technique.
Huh, didn't know that: Continuous motion helps keep an airplane from bogging down on a soft surface.
The wings offered to carry the load, and the wheels gladly agreed.
