SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-starter-30-seconds
How long should you run the starter continuously before giving it a cool-down break?
No more than 30 seconds, then cool down 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- No more than 30 seconds ✔
- No more than 5 minutes
- Until the engine starts, however long
Why: Starters are electric motors not built for long use. The AFH says avoid running one more than 30 seconds without a cool-down of at least 30 seconds to 1 minute. Some POHs require a longer cool-down.
Huh, didn't know that: The smell of burning insulation can mean the starter has cranked too long.
Why did the starter take a break? It was all wound up.
