SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-steep-turn-rollout-lead
What rule of thumb tells you when to begin rolling out of a steep turn?
Lead the heading by half the bank angle.
- Twice the bank angle
- Exactly 5 degrees
- Half the bank angle ✔
Why: Begin rollout before the target heading so the wings reach level on it. A common rule is to lead by half the number of degrees of bank.
Huh, didn't know that: During rollout, gradually reduce back pressure, added power, and any trim used for the turn.
The rollout started early because good headings appreciate punctuality.
