SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-transponder-ident
When should a pilot press the transponder IDENT button?
Only when ATC asks for it.
- Only when ATC requests it ✔
- Each time you check in with a new controller
- Every 10 minutes in busy airspace
Why: IDENT makes your target stand out on the controller's screen. Pressing it when not asked can confuse the controller, so use it only on request.
Huh, didn't know that: The AIM also says to avoid passing through codes 7500, 7600 or 7700 when changing codes, since they trigger alarms.
I pressed IDENT without being asked. Now the controller wants to know who I really am.
