SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-transponder-on-movement-area
How should a transponder normally be operated while taxiing on an airport movement area?
Use the altitude reporting mode.
- In standby
- With altitude reporting off
- In altitude reporting mode ✔
Why: The FAA says to use altitude reporting on airport movement areas, including taxiways and runways. This helps surface surveillance systems identify the aircraft.
Huh, didn't know that: ADS-B Out should also remain enabled on the movement area when equipped.
Why did the transponder speak up on the taxiway? It wanted to be seen.
