SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scout-close-contours-steep
Contour lines on your map are packed very close together. What does that mean?
Steep ground. Close lines mean a steep slope.
- The ground there is flat
- The slope there is steep ✔
- There is a lake or swamp there
Why: Each line is a step up or down in elevation. When the steps are crammed close, the land climbs fast. Lines far apart, or none at all, mean fairly level ground.
Huh, didn't know that: Wider index contours have their elevation numbers printed on them to help you read heights.
I tried to hike where the contour lines touched. It was an uphill battle.
