SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scout-fuse-nylon-rope
How do you keep the cut end of a nylon rope from unraveling?
Fuse it, by carefully melting the end.
- Fuse it by melting the end ✔
- Soak it in water overnight
- Tie a bowline in the end
Why: Nylon and other plastic rope melts with heat, so you fuse the strands together over a flame in a ventilated area. Natural rope like sisal or cotton gets whipped with string instead.
Huh, didn't know that: Melted nylon is hot and sticky, so let it cool before touching the end.
My rope was falling apart, so I gave it a pep talk. Now it's holding it together.
