SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scout-lightning-ridge
You're caught outside in a thunderstorm with no shelter. Where should you NOT be?
On a hilltop or ridge, or under a tall lone tree.
- In a low area or valley
- Near a lower stand of trees
- On a hilltop or ridge ✔
Why: With no building or car nearby, avoid open fields, hilltops, ridges and tall, isolated trees. A low spot or lower stand of trees is less risky, though nowhere outside is truly safe.
Huh, didn't know that: In mountains, storms often build in the early afternoon, so the NWS suggests being down by noon.
Why did the lightning bolt get a job? It wanted to be a bright spark.
