SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scout-smoky-fire-signal
Lost in daytime with a safe place for a signal fire, what makes it easier to spot?
Lots of smoke, from adding green leaves or grass.
- Keep it tiny so it won't be noticed
- Add green leaves or grass to make smoke ✔
- Use only very dry wood so there's no smoke
Why: By day, smoke is what searchers see, so toss green leaves or grass on the flames. At night a bright fire works better. Never build one when fire danger is high.
Huh, didn't know that: Scout Life also says to spread bright clothing or gear in the open to catch a rescue pilot's eye.
Why did the signal fire get attention? It was smokin' hot news.
