SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/ai-dropout-randomly-removes-units
What does dropout randomly remove during a training step?
It removes selected units and their connections.
- All training labels
- Random units and connections ✔
- The optimizer permanently
Why: A new random subset of activations is suppressed during training. This discourages the network from depending too heavily on particular cooperating units.
Huh, didn't know that: The original dropout paper describes each training pass as sampling a thinned network.
Dropout skipped class, but only as regularization.

The key idea is to randomly drop units (along with their connections) from the neural network during training.
