What makes an AI model open-weight?
Its trained weights are public to download and run yourself.
- Its training data is all public
- Anyone can download its trained weights ✔
- It is free to chat with online
Why: Open-weight means the learned parameters are released so you can run or fine-tune the model on your own hardware. That does not guarantee the training data or code are public. Closed models are only reachable through the maker's service.
Huh, didn't know that: NTIA's 2024 report said current evidence was not sufficient to decide that restricting open-weight models is warranted, and urged active monitoring of risks.
Open weights sound like a gym policy. Sadly, nobody spots you.
