SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/astro-cepheid-longer-brighter
For cepheid variable stars, how is the pulsation period linked to luminosity?
The longer the period, the brighter the star.
- Longer period means more luminous ✔
- Longer period means less luminous
- Period and luminosity are unrelated
Why: Time a cepheid's brightness cycle and you know its true luminosity. Compare that with how bright it looks and the inverse square law gives the distance. That makes cepheids standard candles.
Huh, didn't know that: OpenStax reports known cepheids at distances of about 60 million light-years.
Cepheids take their time to shine, and the slow ones shine brightest.

The longer the period (the longer the star takes to vary), the greater the luminosity.
