SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/astro-massive-stars-short-lives
Which kind of star stays on the main sequence longer?
Low-mass stars. Massive stars burn fuel so fast they live far shorter lives.
- Low-mass stars ✔
- High-mass stars
- They all last the same time
Why: A massive star has more fuel but burns it much faster. A 40 solar mass O star lasts about 1 million years, the Sun about 10 billion, and a 0.4 solar mass M star about 200 billion.
Huh, didn't know that: A 0.4 solar mass star's main-sequence lifetime is longer than the current age of the universe.
Massive stars live fast and burn bright. Little red dwarfs just take it slow and steady.

Although massive stars have more fuel, they burn it so prodigiously that their lifetimes are much shorter than those of their low-mass counterparts.
