SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/bird-clipping-not-flight-proof
Does a wing trim guarantee that a pet bird cannot fly away?
No. A trim is only a flight deterrent.
- Yes, for the bird's whole life
- No, a clipped bird may still fly ✔
- Only if one wing is trimmed
Why: Merck warns that wing trimming does not guarantee a bird cannot fly. A bird that glides indoors may gain lift outside in wind, so never rely on clipping to prevent escape.
Huh, didn't know that: Clipped feathers are replaced when the bird molts, and molt timing varies with diet, sunlight and humidity.
Why did the clipped bird still check the forecast? It knew wind could raise the issue.
