Before starting a gasoline inboard engine, how long should you run the bilge blower?

At least four minutes, then check for fumes.

  1. At least 4 minutes ✔
  2. About 30 seconds
  3. At least 15 minutes

Why: Gasoline vapors can collect in the bilge and explode. Boats with remote starters carry a label saying to run the blower at least four minutes and check the bilge for vapors first.

Huh, didn't know that: Ventilation exhaust ducts must start in the lower one-third of the compartment, where heavy fuel vapors settle.

The dad joke
Why was the bilge blower so popular? It was a big fan of safety.
