SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/boat-fueling-close-hatches
When fueling a boat, what should you do with the hatches and openings first?
Close them all before fueling.
- Open them all for airflow
- Close them all before fueling ✔
- Close only the cabin door
Why: The guide says close all hatches and openings before fueling so vapors can't drift inside. Afterward, open everything, run the blower at least four minutes, and sniff for gas.
Huh, didn't know that: The Coast Guard guide says most boat fires and explosions happen during or shortly after fueling.
Why did the gas pump get along with everyone? It always filled them in.
