Why should a boat operator give passengers a safety briefing before getting underway?

So passengers know the emergency procedures before anything goes wrong.

  1. So the operator can hand off responsibility
  2. So passengers can take over steering anytime
  3. So passengers know what to do in an emergency ✔

Why: Emergencies leave little time to explain things. A briefing shows where life jackets, fire extinguishers and the first aid kit are, and what to do if someone falls overboard. The operator stays responsible.

Huh, didn't know that: Before leaving, crews can agree on terms and hand signals, like 'coming up' for speeding up and 'coming down' for slowing down.
