SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/cdl-brake-fade
What happens when a truck's brakes fade on a long downgrade?
Brake fade means brakes overheat and lose stopping power.
- They overheat and stop working well ✔
- They cool and grip better
- They squeal but keep full power
Why: Using the brakes too hard on a long downgrade builds heat. Hot brakes fade, so you must push harder and harder, until they may not slow you at all.
Huh, didn't know that: Brakes out of adjustment stop doing their share first, so the other brakes overheat and fade.
Why don't brakes like long grades? They get heated.

If the brakes become too hot, they may start to fade. This means you have to apply them harder and harder
