SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/chick-no-heat-lamp
What is the biggest danger of a heat lamp in a chicken coop?
Heat lamps can start fires; hang them by a chain, never the cord.
- It can start a fire ✔
- It makes eggs hatch
- It scares off hawks
Why: Coops are full of dry bedding, dust and feathers. A hot bulb that falls or touches bedding can start a fire.
Huh, didn't know that: Healthy adult hens kept dry and out of the wind usually handle cold well; check with your local extension office before adding heat.
Why did the hen skip the heat lamp? She did not want a hot cross beak.
