SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/diab-dka-ketones
In diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), what builds up in the blood?
Ketones, made when the body burns fat because it lacks insulin.
- Ketones, from burning fat for fuel ✔
- Vitamins, from too much fruit
- Calcium, from too much milk
Why: Without enough insulin, cells can't use sugar, so the body burns fat and makes ketones. High ketones cause DKA, a medical emergency. It's most common in type 1 but can happen in type 2.
Huh, didn't know that: Ketone test kits are sold over the counter so you can check at home.
I'd tell you a chemistry joke, but I know I wouldn't get a reaction.
