SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/diab-gestational-meaning
What is gestational diabetes?
Diabetes first diagnosed during pregnancy. It is treatable and manageable.
- Diabetes first diagnosed during pregnancy ✔
- Diabetes that starts after age 65
- Diabetes that only affects newborn babies
Why: Pregnancy hormones can block insulin, and if the body can't make enough extra, blood sugar rises. A diagnosis doesn't mean you had diabetes before or will after. Many people with it have healthy pregnancies and babies.
Huh, didn't know that: Gestational diabetes affects up to 9% of pregnancies in the U.S. each year.
Why do mother kangaroos hate rainy days? Because the kids have to play inside.
