SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/drone-class-c-authorization
What must a remote pilot have before flying a drone in Class C airspace?
Prior ATC authorization.
- A filed flight plan
- A visual observer
- Prior authorization from ATC ✔
Why: Section 107.41 requires prior ATC authorization in Class B, C and D airspace and in Class E surface areas designated for an airport. Class G needs no authorization.
Huh, didn't know that: In most Class E airspace away from an airport's surface area, no ATC authorization is needed.
Why did the drone call the tower first? It was raised to always ask permission.
