SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/drone-ctaf-non-towered-airport
What is a CTAF used for?
Self-announcing traffic at airports without an operating tower.
- Getting takeoff clearance from a tower
- Self-announcing traffic at airports without an operating tower ✔
- Listening to recorded weather only
Why: CTAF stands for Common Traffic Advisory Frequency. At an airport with no operating tower, pilots announce where they are and what they're doing on it, and drone pilots can listen in for awareness.
Huh, didn't know that: At a non-towered airport with no tower, FSS or UNICOM, the MULTICOM frequency 122.9 is used.
Why do bees hum? Because they don't know the words.
